Simone de Beauvoir -- 13 november 1926

[...] Once again saw Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Frans Hals, Ruysdael, Ingres, Delacroix.
Discovered Olympia, Portrait of Zola, one of Whistler's portraits.
Liseuse by Vermeer, some Corots especially Une soirée. I adore the Corot paintings.
Millet and Meissonnier are detestable. Rousseau mediocre. Corot! Corot!
And this beautiful Vermeer.
Look at the elderly single lady who is pontificating, followed by young girls who believe that they like painting because they are taking notes! And the young man filled with wonder because smoke is coming out of the nostrils of a cow painted by a painter I don't know and who is atrocious: Troyon.
Oh! Corot's pale greyish green mill! And his golden Soir and Ville d'Avray! And all his simple tables. [...]

Simone de Beauvoir (1908-1986) was een Franse filosofe en schrijfster. Bovenstaand (vertaald) fragment komt uit het dagboek dat ze als studente bijhield.
