• Bert Le-Merton was een 26-jaar oude mortierschutter in Borneo  toen hij op woensdag 15 augustus 1945 het nieuws hoorde dat de oorlog helemaal voorbij was. Ter herdenking liep de toen 101 jaar oude Bert in 2020 een tocht van 96 km.

The war really is over at last after 5 days of uncertainty. 20.00 American news service announced fact – 21.00 notified from bn & 22.00 heard it myself over the arty radio. So I am convinced this is really it. There is no feeling of excitement or thrill about it. Perhaps it is in the nature of an anti-climax.
