[...] Watching that statuesque (truly) Kim Novak [in Vertigo], I thought of how in Russia dumpy, bearded, endlessly acquisitive and competitive [scenarioschrijver] Paddy Chayevsky regaled me with accounts of how she had pleasured him. Poor Paddy, now some more than a year dead—vanished; Kim Novak with all that sleek blondness and opulent sexiness. . .. What one remembers, like a dietetic, wetly savoring in his mind the taste of chocolate, is the image of rodent-like huffing and puffing Chayevsky recounting the joys of Kim Novak sucking him! My first thought when he recounted the scène was of how unattractive she must have thought him. But no—he was somehow a power (for the moment) in Hollywood, and there is something about the entertainment business that breeds that jocularity.
