Feb. 29th Saturday
Today I woke up late - & somewhat refreshed
but to find cloudy, threatening weather, & before
long continued hard rain. Claude [broer] did not feel
well and remained at the hotel resting until
his luncheon with Mr. & Mrs. Kimball
(of S. & K.)
at 1:30 & afterward he went to the league . I started out
rather, late, and made some ineffectual journeys
in the rain. Took the 6th Ave. L. to Aldrich Court
and after waiting to see Emerich awhile went
over to the Stevens House for lunch and then came
back & found him & had quite a pleasant call.
He took me over into the Manhattan Life Bldg.
to see the Mast Box and then up into the
Surety [een van de eerste wolkenkrabbers]
- that beautiful, tall, white building.
We went into a lovely office on the 20th floor &
looked down upon the tops of the buildings
and could have seen many miles, but
for the rain & fog. I got up town just in time
to reach Daly's Theatre comfortably in time for the
two o'clock Matinee - "Countess Gucki" [toneelstuk van Franz von Schonthan]. It
was very good - but not beginning with
"The Squire of Dame' or "La Signora Dalle Camelie"!
Mr. Richman made a handsome & stunning &
daring young officer - but laughed too much. Ada Rehan - was Ada Rehan - but her 1819 costumes
were awful - most of them. Mrs. Gilbert & James
Lewis made a funny pair - both very good.
Mr. Herbert was a dear, blonde, uniformed, curly-headed
Cousin Leopold - in love with Cousin Lilli, of course.
Both Bruno Von Neuhoff & his uncle the General are in
love with Countess Gucki - but of course the young man is
the successful one. There is only one scene - 3 acts -
a very pretty scene, too. Empire-inlaid tables &c.&c. It
poured on the roof of the theatre & still rained when I
came out, but it was my last afternoon, so I
walked up Broadway & 5th Avenue - rain or no rain.
The couples, broughams & hansoms were very numerous.
