Men vreest opnieuw weer sterk voor oorlog.

30 MARCH 1980. PHOENIX HOUSE
There is only one English feature director whose work is in the first rank. Michael Powell is the only director to make a clear political analysis in his films, his work is unequalled. The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp is the finest English feature, and A Canterbury Tale and A Matter of Life and Death are not far behind. When he made these films he was heavily criticized for his treatment of serious themes. Blimp was banned by Churchill and remained in a savaged version for nearly forty years, a plea for tolerance and regard for the enemy as human made at the height of the war - there is no more courageous English film. It is a tragedy he has made so few films in the last twenty years, none in the last ten, and a lasting condemnation of all those who make films. He was a major casualty of the spurious social realism of the sixties, whose practitioners have grown fat and invaded the media with their well-scrubbed minds. Their films are never seen by the communities they are made in, but transported via the colour supplements straight to a land where the consciences of the Conscious are titillated and prizes for honest are won...

vrijdag 29 maart 1918
Goede Vrijdag … 29 maart … Vandaag was Gukie jarig.
O Jesu, opgeheven
en hangende aan het Kruis,
ik wille u ’t beste geven
en ’t schoonste van mijn huis.
Mijn kind, dat ik ontvangen,
gebaard heb en gevoed,
mijn moederlijk verlangen,
mijn eigen vleesch en bloed.
Gij schiept ons alle beiden,
Gij stierft voor mij en haar,
’t is ’t Uwe, en moet ik scheiden,
hoe noo ik scheide, – daar.
’k Ontgeve ’t mij: ’k herwinne ’t
ten tweede male, nu:
herboren herbeminne ’t
zijn moederken bij U.
’t Is Goede Vrijdag … 29 maart … Guusje is jarig! …

Barbara Pym -- 27 maart 1940

• Barbara Pym (1913-1980) was een Engelse schrijfster. Dagboekfragmenten van haar zijn opgenomen in A very private eye. An autobiography in diaries and letters.

March
But I remember, I remember.... I was never more happy in my life than with him [Jay] in the spring of 1938. I am sure that I truly loved him and do still. I put this in writing so that in the years to come I may look back on it and reflect about it (as poor Friedbert would say) and smile and say, 'No, no, it was only a passing infatuation,' or 'Yes, yes, you did love him...'
Oh how absurd and delicious it is to be in love with somebody younger than yourself! Everybody should try it - no life can be complete without it. 'When we have before us such objects as excite love and complacency...' Love and complacency - and children should be flattered! So I will leave this notebook to Jay in my will.

27 March [on holiday in Wales]. Pwllheli looked lovely - the sea calm and sparkling, the cardboard hills clear in the distance.
Today was my darling Jay's twenty-first birthday and I was able to drink his health in Burgundy (not Empire). I wish I knew where he was. As it was there was a beautifully religious effect in my room at night - a single candle before his photograph, lighting up his lovely, sparkling Russian eyes. Like an ikon - he would have appreciated it. One day I must remember to tell him. But I will not tell him that the reason why I had the candle there was because I had no reading lamp and wanted to read in bed. Children must still be flattered - even when they are twenty-one.

William Steinway -- 26 maart 1889

March 26th Tuesd.
Go to store very early to write Theo. a nice long letter, when two cablegrams come in which I open with a trembling hand. The first is dated Hamburg, March 26th 1889 “Have left for Braunschweig, Shall stay there until day after funeral of my good papa Theodor [Williams oudere broer] who died suddenly last night. Cast one hundred N. plates Holwede” My heart almost stands still with horror, opening the other cablegram dated Braunschweig March 26th 1889 says “Theodor vorige Nacht plotzlich an Herzlähmung gestorben wird hier begraben Louise Cassebeer jetzt nicht kommen, Dorette” My head swims with terror, I instantly summon the Nephews + my son and cable Dorette Ziegler that we are griefstricken, to tell us when funeral is, to let Prof. Echtemeyer take Theodors Todten maske and to take care of Theodores Shares of Stock in St + Sons. An immense throng of people crowd me all day, and I have all I can do to give information to the press. Holwede cables from Braunschweig “funeral Thursday” and Chas. Ziegler starts from London there. Home in ev’g but both wife + myself are so excited that I pass a sleepless night, wrote Dorette, Holwede, Chas. Ziegler.

March 27th Wed.
Theodors death had been cabled from Berlin by the associated press and I receive many despatches, even from Agthe, Berlin, and Lomber San Francisco. All the papers have fine obituary notices and I cause the following official notices to go into German and english papers: Assemble nephews and my son George we resolve to closeup all our establishments tomorrow, St. Hall, Astoria & 53d str. also London and Hamburg. Home in eveg, look over Theodors will and codicills once more, filling waiver of citation and Executors petition carefully, having seen Surrogate Rastus S. Ransom, and Edward J. Tinney Probate Clerk, and instructed by them as to proceedings as to probate of C. F. Theodor Steinways will, which is a very complicated one heirs scattered in America & Europe.

March 28th Thursd.
Raining. Many letters, telegrams and visitors of condolence. Hans v. Bulow conducted concert last night, refusing to play piano, I set Stürck copying will and codicills, he gets through at 3½ P.M. when I go down town, stop at Bischoffs, then by high hat craped at Ernenweins and work like a beaver at Surrogates Office filing will and getting order of Surrogates Home in ev’g working. In answer to my cablegram to Herrig + Frantz as to Theodors deposit they cable back “194.000. ferner 70.000. Effecten” Herrig. Wife tells me that baby is very lively + kicking strongly.

Allen Ginsberg -- 25 maart 1962

Jaipur March 25, 1962 — on Morphia —
Lying trom 8 PM to 11 on charpoy (rough rope spring woven on wooden cot frame) in Tourist Bungalow, after spending the day in bazaar and streets Jaipurish — As lying there in my familiar body, a subtle detachment took place as usual and I lay outside my fleeting life surveying its twinkling away — that now more and more as this life approaches its meridian of 37 years and being half gone by becomes more sure of its mortalism, the chance of the life tho marked by shows and pageants, poetical & airborne — consisting in sexualities & all sorts of fame — as it were — were not much to go by. After all, what's all that experience limited as it is, to a Henry James of the entire Kosmos? So flit as I go by — all I've seen is my own life go by, swift as a mosquito with climactic buzzings of aestheticism & self congratulatory Rhapsody & morphia inactions & musings furthermore. An open closet door — I'Il return to the States, take an apartment — where with thinning hair & more tentative soul, arrange my possessions, type up my notes, discharge them for posterities, place my statues in order — one Japanese scroll of medium quality, one Korean print of an awakening Roshi, several cheap Nepalese tantric small figures, Tara, Avaloketesvara, the 1000 armed Destroyer of Death, Ganesha with a red belly button, Hanuman Pious & praying, Krishna fluting, Shiva whirling his arms & dancing, Kali with a necklace of skulls on Shiva's belly astride — an orange wool Tibetan Blanket, a few Amazon cloths & pipes, a Mexican basket, a straw hat and whatever other Persian type miniatures I collect — and that's the accomplishment of a life searching and travel wherever I can go on my earth.
Kali, Durga, Ram, Hari, Krishna, Brahma, Buddha, Allah, Jaweh, Christ, Mazda, Coyote, hear my plea!
Avaloketesvara, Maitreya, St. John, Ho-Tei, Kuan-Yin, Satan, Dipankara, Padma Sambava — whoever there is — is there ever anyone but me?
Lying in bed in Jaipur on morphine, lone in Denver awake on Benzedrine, flat on my back in Puccallpa wrapped in Death Vines, Valparaiso or Santiago enthralled with atropine — Shamans' herbs or modern Somas absorbed & vomited — not yet comprehended to any Eternity. A mosquito buzzing near my ear again. My face sweating having covered itself with thin film of mosquito repellent.
There is no direction I can willingly go into without strain — nearest being lotus posture & quiet mornings, vegetarian breathing before the dawn, I may never be able to do that with devotion. And if it is a matter of Karma and reincarnation, when will I ever learn? All the saints like Shivananda handing me rupees & books of yoga and I'm no good. My hair getting long, wearing a huge thin silk shirt, useless to perfect my conscience. A smoking habit my worst Karma to overcome.
Ill the other day, my bones in flu or grip of ache, sleeping from 5PM to 9AM with supper break & a few cigarettes & dreams and barefoot it down twice to pee — I didn't fear death or think of it. Maybe that's an improvement.
Self Conscious, I have nowhere to go. Maybe might as well leave it at that, continue to travel and die as I am when I die.
Avaloketesvara, Kuan Yin, Jaweh, Saints, Saddhus, Rishis, benevolent ones, Compassionate Superconscious ones, etc, what can you do for me now? What's to be done with my life which has lost its idea?
If it's a matter of each being has to create its own divinity, far be it from me to know what to do or be. I don't even have a good theory of vegetarianism. As for love & sex, I don't know what to say, Peter sleeping on his side in the next bed, still faith-ful tho I must be poor company to old beauty. And lying on my own back in the dark, the world just keeps revolving as before.
At least I'm down in possessions to Peter & a knapsack. I still am loaded with Karma of many letters & unfinished corres-pondence. I wanted to be a saint. But suffer for what? Illusions? The rain, were it to rustle the leaves, would seem more friendly than before & more reminiscent of an old dream. But all the con-nections are vague, machines make noise & lights across the road I've never investigated. Next the rest of India & Japan, and I suppose later a trip: England, Denmark, Sweden & Norway, Germany, Poland, Russia, China & then back home again. And thatll be the end of that world, I'll be about 50, the relatives'11 all be dead by then, old ties with the boys of yore be loosed or burnt, unfaithful, in so many decades it's best to let it all go — is Jack drunk? Is Neal still aware of me? Gregory yakking? Bill mad at me? Am I even here to myself ? I daren't write it all down, it's too shameful & boring now & I haven't the energy to make a great passional autobiography of it all — for who's all that autobiography for if it doesn't deliver heaven or reason-able equivalent? Anyway, who is that autobiography for? Young kids after the movies? I guess I have nothing to contrib-ute to general edification by this vague haphazard slow motion death. "Red Cats" a fine title anyway.

Noted on edge of Bombay map —

Stop trying not to die
fly where you can fly
What do you want to know about your mother?
Anything that gets you high,
eat an orange with your eye,
any movie you see is as good as any other.
It is your business what you buy
Picture postcards apple pie
                aren't such a bother
— Upside down the birds are floatïng thru the sky.
